A Guided Tour to the Utechma Sound Files
by Kristi Wachter, Head Racerhead, Racer Records. (Please note
that all descriptions were written by an unabashed fan; your
mileage may vary.)
Enjoy!
-
Chinatown
Pointless classification: Synth Alternative
A clangy tune about location and intimacy, in 9/8.
Sound clip is taken from the first verse.
"I want to go live in Chinatown because the food's so good ..."
-
Into that hole
Pointless classification: Slow Synth Song
A slow, dreamy, wave with some amazing imagery ("Falling into
your open eyes, into the sunlight, into the pool again").
Better and better on each listen.
Sound clip is taken from the end of the second verse.
"Climbing into your spinning head ..."
-
Delirium
Pointless classification: Intelligent Synth Pop
One of my favorite songs on the album - this is the one I
typically go home humming after one of her concerts. GREAT
marimba playing. Wonderful lyrics.
Sound clip is taken from the end of the first verse and half of
first chorus.
"If I could only breathe I would sigh just like a comic strip
..."
-
Get that camera out of here
Pointless classification: Rock
Nice interplay between the guitar and keyboards here - sparse
instrumentation building at the end.
Sound clip is taken from the second verse.
"Get that camera out of here, out of my house ..."
-
Fish
Pointless classification: Experimental
A hallucinatory excursion underwater.
Sound clip is taken from second verse.
"The courthouse is a swimming pool ..."
-
Tango
Pointless classification: Pop Tango
Half tough, half soft; half rock, half tango; half violent,
half vulnerable; totally, totally cool.
Sound clip is taken from end of first verse and start of second
verse.
"Drink me poison and wire here on the outside ..."
-
Money in the sky
Pointless classification: Intelligent Pop
One of my three favorite songs on the album. A thoughtful
musing builds to a crash in this brilliant track about money
and choices, both national and personal.
Sound clip is taken from second verse.
"What would you do if you could run the show ..."
-
Humility
Pointless classification: Raw Vocal
An a capella response to open mic nights and poetry readings
and their implications.
Sound clip is taken from the end of the first verse.
"I've got my pain, you've got your beer ..."
-
My Empire
Pointless classification: Intelligent Pop
One of my three favorite songs on the album. A danceable,
lilting satire on serious money.
Sound clip is taken from second verse.
"My only solace is my empire ..."
-
Utechma
Pointless classification: Experimental Dance Pop
Totally cool tune that starts with a bagpipey drone and
sea-shanty vocal and flips over into a dance-pop rumination on
taking it with you when you go.
Sound clip is taken from first chorus.
"Here is my heart - here is my aorta and my favorite song ..."
-
Hunger for heaven
Pointless classification: Hymn
Beautiful, haunting song about saviors and dying.
Sound clip is taken from the end of the fourth verse.
"All the heroes in the world never rolled you a model ..."
