When OCR Goes Bad

To save wear and tear on my fingers and wrists, I used OCR (optical character recognition) software to convert printed articles to electronic format.

Fortunately, OCR software has gotten cheaper and more accurate in the last few years. However, it still makes mistakes. I found lots of problems with "h" and "b", so Tommy ended up playing in a good hand and JY's harmonics became barmonks.

The main point of mentioning this is to alert you to possible errors in the articles posted here (although I did try to proofread them). It also gives me a chance to share my favorite example of Bad OCR:

The original reads:

Shaw's contribution to the richly textured Styx sound is rooted in his intuitive songwriting ability, vocal flair, and rhythmic sense. His singing and playing chops were honed on R&B ... There's a certain restlessness evident in Tommy's demeanor when he takes the stage. It could be nerves, but more likely it's pure creative energy waiting for the lights to go up so it can find release through music.
My first pass through OCR software gave me:

Shaw's contribution to the richly tex- tured Styx sound is rooted in his intuitive songwriting ability, vocal Hair, and rhythmic sense. His singing and playing chops were honed on R&H ... lhere s a certain restlessness evident in Tasty's demeanor when he takes the stage. lt could be nerves, but more likely it's pure creative energy waiting for the tights to go up so it can find release through music.
